In many countries across the world, winter is the time of reflection, introspection, snuggling into home and hearth. It can be a time of deep rest. Stealing myself away from the din of the fast approaching Christmas season, I really wonder how much more do I need. Am I happy enough with what I have? A resounding yes, comes to mind. What more do I need?
Some years ago I decided to live my life in gratitude. Life has a way of changing a person who has done a lot of inner work; started truly listening, working through the baggage, reconciling mistakes, and coming out the other side humbly different. I found that living in gratitude has softened the world around me and its beauty more vibrant and joyous. Remembering the exact moment when I realized that the other shoe doesn't have to fall is ever vivid. In other words, not expecting something negative is going to happen because it hasn't happened in a while. What a revelation! Why not, you say? Because I shifted the paradigm to offering gratitude, every day.
While I'm not the first, nor the last, to come to this conclusion, I write about gratitude because of this particular time of year. I have everything I could ever want. Seems too altruistic in this consumer society, doesn't it. Even a little Pollyanna-ish. But when living in gratitude, the stresses of life seem to fall away. The wrinkles are smoothed out. Big problems are more easily managed. I can breathe.
So when someone asks, "What do you want for Christmas?", I invite you to take a breath, step back, and ask yourself, what do I really need. No, judgment if there is something material that you are wishing. But if there is a hesitation, a wondering, a pondering . . . then maybe there is enough. Maybe time with family (including pets) and friends in a precious quiet way is all that is needed. A little something to think about coming into the Christmas season.
