Today I was so excited to receive my Remember Me Thursday box in the mail. It held a t-shirt, dog bandana for Winnie, a flameless candle, and a couple of other goodies I will share in days leading up to September 28th.
What is Remember Me Thursday? Five years ago, an organization, the Helen Woodward Animal Center of California, held an event, of which would be an annual event, on the fourth Thursday of September. The event's intent was to draw attention to the millions of animals world-wide who lose their lives waiting for their forever homes. Amazingly, last year, over 164 countries celebrated this day in various forms and commonly, by lighting a candle to remember.
Several years ago, our family was looking for a medium-sized dog who wouldn't require formal grooming. Our neighbour had a Desi street dog from New Delhi, India. She was a sweetie, about 40 lbs. and quiet. Perfect! We made our application and she was on her way. Even though we hadn't met her, our attitude was that we'd get the dog we were supposed to have with no guarantee. We got the opposite of our neighbour. Winnie turned out to be the party dog. Rambunctious, stubborn, and a winter weight of 68 pounds. What she truly was however, was a teacher of patience, perseverance and a whole bunch of other things we needed to embrace. She has deep pools of love in her eyes that would melt both your heart and soul. She has a heart overflowing with love. Winnie was our rescue. Yes, we've had the question, "Why didn't you get a dog here?" We tried, but at that point in time there were only small or large dogs available. We searched for months. Overall, it really doesn't matter where the pet comes from. As long as he or she will have their loving forever home and good care.
I am so delighted to be a part of this worthy, and heart-felt movement. If there is only one animal that is adopted out of all of this, it is worth the time to put thoughts to page. I invite you to participate according to your heart's calling. Thank you for celebrating in an animal's life.
